The island of Beqa, home of the mysterious Firewalkers, rises from the depths of the Beqa Lagoon. Rich in Fijian culture - Beqa Island holds as many marvels and wonders as her lagoon. This beautiful island offers tropical rainforests to explore, hikes to a crystal waterfall and visits to a local village. For me, experiencing the children of the local school will always be dear to my heart. On my last visit to Marlin Bay our group was invited to the school where we were the foreign celebrities. We were treated to the beautiful voices of children singing local songs and their national anthem. After the display of true Fijian friendliness we shared with them the game of baseball. We had brought the baseball equipment with us, using rugs for bases. I don't know who had more fun, them, or us watching them learn our national pastime. To this day, the sight of these Fijian children so enjoying something as simple as our baseball, is one of the fondest memories I cherish from this place.

There are many diverse things you can do at Marlin Bay, one of them is scuba diving in the pristine waters protected by a Beqa's barrier reef. There are numerous dive sites within 20 minutes of the resort. You will dive passages and cuts in the reef, bommies filled with soft corals, see large lion fish and thousands of colorful fish. If you do not dive, you can stroll the beach looking for shells, picnic on a nearby secluded island and snorkel slowly through the warm turquoise waters filled with rainbow hued tropicals.

The deluxe beachfront bures at Marlin Bay are exquisitely furnished and spacious. The Bure Kalou with its soaring eighty-foot thatched roof is where the restaurant and bar is located. Built from local hardwoods, it provided us with the perfect setting to enjoy the delightful dishes that the chefs serve. Meals are diverse, including local fish, shellfish, locally grown vegetables, fruits, New Zealand lamb and Australian beef.

My favorite experience, besides playing baseball with the school kids, was the incredible cultural experience of watching the Beqa lagoon firewalkers. The village and chief of Beqa are indeed unique. The day started with the village arriving by boat to deliver the wood. Then they prepared a large bonfire. The Fijian chief, throughout the day, watched over and blessed the fire. As the sun began to set, the Fijian warriors, dressed in the traditional grass sulus began their ceremony. The Fijian chief, overseeing the fire ceremony, watched as the warriors began to walk across the hot coals. After the ceremony we went inside and the Fijian warriors performed a "meke" of Fijian song and dance... my favorite being Isa Lei. I can not to this day hear that song and not begin to cry as Fiji is a part of me now.
